Understand charging errors
When a card scan fails, the ExpresScan app shows a full-screen error with a red X icon, a short explanation, and (in most cases) a button to try again. This page walks you through each error you might see, what it means, and what to do next.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- You have the ExpresScan app installed and open on your iPhone.
- You’ve seen one of the error screens described below after tapping or scanning a card.
What happens on every error screen
Section titled “What happens on every error screen”Goal Recognize and recover from a scan error
Time~3 min
-
Read the title and message
Each error screen has a bold title and a short message below it. The title tells you what went wrong; the message tells you what to do.

Every error variant shares the same layout: red X icon, title, message, optional action button. -
Watch the countdown in the top-right corner
A small ring in the top-right corner counts down from 10 seconds. When it reaches zero, the app returns to the ready screen on its own. You don’t need to do anything to dismiss the error.
-
Tap the action button, or go back
Most errors offer a button at the bottom — “Try again”, “Retry”, “Try a different card”, or “Sign in”. Tap it to take the suggested next step. If you’d rather dismiss the error immediately, tap the back chevron in the top-left corner.
Verify
Section titled “Verify”You’re back on the ready screen, ready to scan a card again — either because you tapped back, tapped the action button, or waited 10 seconds for the auto-dismiss.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”Match the title on your screen to the section below.
”Scan timed out”
Section titled “”Scan timed out””The app didn’t detect a card in time.
- Hold your card flat against the top edge of your iPhone, where the NFC reader sits.
- Keep the card still until the app reacts.
- Tap Try again.
”Card not supported”
Section titled “”Card not supported””The card you scanned isn’t one ExpresScan can read.
- Use a different NFC card. Not every contactless card works — your EV card from your operator is the one to use.
- Tap Try a different card.
”Couldn’t reach ExpressCharge”
Section titled “”Couldn’t reach ExpressCharge””Your iPhone can’t talk to the ExpressCharge service.
- Check that you have a cellular or Wi-Fi connection.
- Move to a spot with better signal if you’re in a basement or parking garage.
- Tap Retry once you’re back online.
”Scan expired”
Section titled “”Scan expired””The scan request from the admin timed out before you tapped your card. There’s no retry button on this one — the request has to be started fresh.
- Ask the admin to start a new scan.
- The app returns to the ready screen automatically.
”Signed out”
Section titled “”Signed out””An admin signed this device out of ExpresScan. Your session is no longer valid.
- Tap Sign in to authenticate again.
- If you don’t have credentials, contact the admin who manages this device.
”Something went wrong”
Section titled “”Something went wrong””A generic server error. The app couldn’t complete the request and doesn’t have a more specific reason.
- Tap Retry.
- If it happens repeatedly, wait a minute and try again, or contact support.
